In this 3-part blog series, Brandon Board, Digital Services Coordinator, Waubonsee Community College Libraries, discusses proposed changes to automatic textbook billing programs in the US. The Department of Education (ED) is considering requiring colleges to get student permission (opt-in) before charging them for course materials. Currently, many schools use an opt-out system where students are automatically enrolled. This post explains the arguments for and against the change, and concludes that schools should be prepared to adapt and advocate for student choice.
